Exercise 1

Kelly wasn't sure what she should do. She needed ten more dollars to buy the bike helmet she wanted. Now, her friend, Patty, wanted to buy her old roller skates for twelve dollars. Kelly had gotten new skates for her birthday and she really didn't need the old ones. But her parents had told her she must check with them before she could sell or give away any of her things.

Exercise 2

Greg wanted to play ball, but not one of his friends were at the playground. The only boy around was Jerry, a new kid in school. Jerry was quiet and had not seemed too friendly during school. Greg was about to go home when he noticed that Jerry was holding a baseball mitt. Greg thought for a few minutes then walked over to Jerry.

Exercise 3

The children were playing basebal in the empty lot. Peggy was up to bat. She swung hard and hit the ball further than anyone else had. The ball sailed across the lot and smashed through Mrs. Allen's window. Mrs. Allen was always yelling at the children to go somewhere else to play. Peggy knew she would really be angry this time. The other kids scattered, running for home. Peggy stood in the field looking at the broken window.
